Study in Sweden: Admission, Cost, Visa and Scholarships (2027)

Sweden runs a centralized university admissions system. Almost every bachelor's and master's program, at every state university and at most independent institutions, is applied for through one national portal, universityadmissions.se, run by the Swedish Council for Higher Education. A student picks a set number of programs in order of preference, submits one application and one fee, and the portal handles selection and offers for every institution at once.

The academic year has two intakes. The main one is autumn, starting in late August or early September, with a smaller spring intake starting in mid January that carries far fewer English taught programs. For citizens of the EU, the EEA and Switzerland, higher education in Sweden is free and the application and document deadlines sit close to the semester start. Everyone else pays an application fee and, if admitted, tuition, and applies months earlier in a separate international round built around the extra time needed to arrange a residence permit.

For autumn entry, the international round opens in mid October the year before and the application deadline falls on 15 January, with supporting documents and the application fee due about two weeks later, on 1 February. Selection results for most master's programs follow around the start of April, with bachelor's results about a week after. Programs vary in how selective they are, but Swedish admissions rely heavily on documented academic merit rather than interviews or entrance exams, aside from a few programs in art, design, music and similar fields that test a portfolio or audition, and a small number of business programs that ask for a separate admission test score.

Tuition for non-EU, non-EEA students is set by each university and often by each program, and Sweden does not publish one national tuition figure. Confirmed figures gathered from individual universities during this research run show annual tuition from about SEK 82,500 at the low end to about SEK 870,000 for the most expensive programs, such as music, at the high end, with most academic programs in engineering, business and the sciences landing somewhere in the SEK 100,000 to SEK 300,000 a year range. Universities are required to publish a fee for every fee paying program and to bill it per semester in advance, though some universities state the fee as a single figure for the whole program rather than per year.

Almost all master's programs, and a smaller number of bachelor's programs, are taught fully in English, and Swedish universities ask non-native speakers for English proficiency equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6, most often shown as an IELTS Academic score of 6.5 with no section below 5.5, or a TOEFL iBT score of around 90. Swedish itself is not required for an English taught program, though many students pick up some through introductory courses once enrolled.

Non-EU/EEA students who are admitted and either pay their tuition or hold a scholarship apply for a residence permit for studies through Migrationsverket, the Swedish Migration Agency. Students holding this permit may work alongside their studies within a weekly hour limit that changed in June 2026, and can apply for a further permit after finishing their studies in order to look for work or start a business in Sweden.
