Sweden Student Visa (2027): Requirements, Proof of Funds, Fee, Processing Time

What you need

A valid passport. Confirmation of admission to a full time program lasting at least one semester at a Swedish university, which Migrationsverket receives automatically from the admissions system. Proof of payment of the first tuition installment in full, or documentation of a scholarship or fee exemption that covers it, for students who are required to pay tuition. Proof of funds for living costs, at least SEK 10,656 a month for the length of the permit (figure for applications made in 2026), shown through bank statements, a loan confirmation, a scholarship letter, or a sponsor's bank statements and a signed commitment. Comprehensive health insurance if the permit covers less than one year. For accompanying family members: proof of the relationship, such as a marriage or partnership certificate, or a child's birth certificate, plus their own proof of funds.

How to apply

1. Receive an admission offer through universityadmissions.se, then pay the first tuition installment if you are a fee paying student, or confirm a scholarship or exemption that covers it.
2. Apply online at migrationsverket.se, or through a Swedish embassy or consulate where online application is not available, and pay the SEK 1,500 fee (SEK 750 for a child under 18).
3. Upload the required documents, including proof of funds and, if applicable, health insurance.
4. Attend a biometrics appointment at an embassy, consulate or visa application center to have a photo and fingerprints taken.
5. Wait for a decision; about three in four recently decided cases have been decided within three months.
6. After arrival in Sweden, notify Migrationsverket of your address within 30 days if your permit was granted on or after 11 June 2026, unless population registration with the Swedish Tax Agency already covers this.

Why applications are refused

Incomplete or missing documents, insufficient proof of funds for the length of the permit, unpaid tuition where payment is required before the permit application can be approved, an admission offer that is conditional or not yet confirmed, or doubts about the applicant's intention to leave Sweden once the permit ends.
