A non-EU/EEA student budgets for three costs: the SEK 900 application fee, tuition, and living costs. Tuition is set per university and program. Figures confirmed directly from individual Swedish universities during this research run range from about SEK 82,500 a year at the low end to SEK 870,000 for the most expensive programs, with most academic programs in the SEK 100,000 to SEK 300,000 a year range, billed once or twice a year depending on the university. Migrationsverket asks students applying for a residence permit to show at least SEK 10,656 a month available for living costs, for applications made in 2026, reduced if free housing or food is already arranged through the university. This figure is a minimum for the residence permit application, not a full survey of living costs, and actual spending on rent, food and transport in a larger city such as Stockholm or Gothenburg can run higher than the minimum.
