Karolinska Institutet Admission 2027: Deadlines, Requirements, Fees for International Students

Admission at a glance

Karolinska Institutet admits international bachelor's and master's students through the national portal at universityadmissions.se, the same system used by every other Swedish university. Applicants from outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland apply in the international round for autumn entry, which opens in mid October the year before studies start and closes on 15 January. Supporting documents, including transcripts, degree certificates and proof of English proficiency, are due by 1 February, the same date as the deadline for paying the SEK 900 application fee.

Karolinska Institutet teaches a small number of programs in English, mostly at master's level in fields such as biomedicine, public health, nutrition science and toxicology, plus an English taught bachelor's program in biomedicine. Its own tuition fees page states annual costs from about SEK 82,500 for the Health Informatics master's program up to about SEK 100,000 a year for several other master's programs, including Biomedicine, Nutrition Science, Molecular Techniques, Toxicology, and Translational Physiology and Pharmacology; the bachelor's program in Biomedicine costs about SEK 90,000 a year on the same page.

Selection for most programs relies on documented academic merit, with some programs also asking for a personal letter or an interview. Non-EU applicants who are offered a place must pay the first tuition installment, or hold a confirmed scholarship, before applying for a residence permit for studies through Migrationsverket. Karolinska Institutet awards a limited number of its own tuition reductions to strong non-EU/EEA applicants at the same time as admission, on top of the national Swedish Institute scholarships that many applicants also apply for separately.

Requirements

Bachelor

A completed upper secondary education equivalent to Swedish gymnasium, with the specific subject prerequisites listed on the program page. English proficiency equivalent to English 6.

Master

A bachelor's degree, or equivalent, corresponding to at least 180 ECTS credits from a recognized university, normally in a related field, plus any subject specific prerequisites for medicine and health science programs. English proficiency equivalent to English 6, generally IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no section below 5.5, or TOEFL iBT total 90 with at least 20 in writing.
