Karolinska Institutet Admission Requirements 2027

Karolinska Institutet is a specialist medical university in Solna, next to Stockholm, and one of Europe's leading centers for biomedical and clinical research. It teaches mostly at master's level in the health sciences, with a small number of programs taught in English, and applies through the shared national admissions system used across Sweden.

Requirements

Bachelor

A completed upper secondary education equivalent to Swedish gymnasium, with the specific subject prerequisites listed on the program page. English proficiency equivalent to English 6.

Master

A bachelor's degree, or equivalent, corresponding to at least 180 ECTS credits from a recognized university, normally in a related field, plus any subject specific prerequisites for medicine and health science programs. English proficiency equivalent to English 6, generally IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no section below 5.5, or TOEFL iBT total 90 with at least 20 in writing.

Documents

Scanned passport photo page, secondary school or bachelor's degree certificate and transcript, a CV in the format Karolinska Institutet provides, proof of English proficiency, and, for non-EU/EEA applicants, proof of application fee payment or a citizenship document showing exemption. Some programs ask for a personal letter. All documents are uploaded to the national portal at universityadmissions.se, not sent to Karolinska Institutet directly.

How to apply

  1. Check the entry requirements for the chosen program on Karolinska Institutet's website.
  2. Create an account at universityadmissions.se and submit the application before the 15 January deadline for the following autumn.
  3. Pay the SEK 900 application fee, if required, and upload all supporting documents by 1 February.
  4. Wait for the selection results, published around 1 April for most master's programs.
  5. Accept the offered place on the national portal and, if a non-EU citizen, pay the first tuition installment.
  6. Apply for a Swedish residence permit for studies once tuition is paid or a scholarship is confirmed.

English test waiver

Karolinska Institutet does not set its own IELTS or TOEFL minimum. It asks for English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6, verified the same way as every other Swedish university through universityadmissions.se, which accepts either an English 6 qualifying prior education or an English test.
