Admission at a glance

Karlstad University admits bachelor's and master's students through universityadmissions.se, the national portal used across Sweden, with the international round for autumn entry opening in mid October the year before studies start and closing on 15 January, per the national schedule that Karlstad follows.

Karlstad University's own tuition fees page states full program fees for non-EU/EEA students, confirmed for the 2026/2027 academic year, ranging from about SEK 285,000 to SEK 450,000 for bachelor's programs and about SEK 200,000 to SEK 580,000 for master's programs, both billed as a total programme cost paid in advance each semester rather than a single annual figure. Its music programs, a separate and smaller category, run higher still, from about SEK 290,000 to SEK 870,000 for the full program.

Admission is based on documented academic merit against each program's own requirements. Karlstad University runs its own Global Scholarship, giving a 50 percent tuition fee reduction to outstanding non-EU/EEA students admitted to a master's degree program, confirmed on the university's own scholarships page. Once admitted, a fee paying student pays tuition in advance of each semester, then applies for a residence permit for studies through Migrationsverket.
