Aveiro runs its Special Call for International Students in three phases, and each lets an applicant list up to three courses in order of preference. For 2026/27 the first phase ran from 5 to 29 January 2026 and the third from 1 to 9 July, and both were only for candidates exempt from the local written tests because they hold recognised exams from their own country. The second phase, 25 March to 7 April, is the one with written entrance exams, held from 20 to 30 April at Aveiro and at selected locations including some candidates' home countries, with results on 19 May. Placed first-phase candidates registered from 13 to 19 March; third-phase lists came out on 16 and 22 July. The university publishes the exam programme and sample exams for each course, and a list of foreign national exams that exempt a candidate from the local tests. The application is made on Aveiro's platform with the school-leaving qualification that gives access to higher education in the candidate's country, translated into Portuguese or English, and the EUR 70 application fee. Eligibility excludes Portuguese and EU nationals, their family members, and nationals covered by an equal-rights treaty with Portugal; EU students apply through the national access competition instead. Master's and doctoral candidates apply the same way as Portuguese students. Teaching is in Portuguese and B1 is required, though a candidate below B1 may apply on condition of an intensive course.
