Cost of Studying in Portugal (2027) for International Students

Non-EU students enter Portuguese public universities through the International Student Statute, a special call with its own quota and fees set by each university. The deciding fact is language: bachelor's degrees are taught in Portuguese, and the University of Coimbra requires Portuguese at B2, with a paid foundation year for those below it. Applications run in several phases through the year rather than to one deadline.

Portugal charges international students a fee set by each university according to the real cost of the course, which is well above the rate Portuguese and EU students pay.

The University of Coimbra's current table for international students enrolling for the first time in a full bachelor's or integrated master's degree lists: tuition from EUR 3,000 a year; EUR 18,000 a year for the Integrated Master's in Medicine; EUR 7,000 for the Zero Year in Portuguese Language; EUR 5,000 for the Zero Year in specific subjects in the sciences or humanities; an application fee of EUR 50; an enrolment fee of EUR 20; EUR 45 for the physical and sports aptitude prerequisite where it applies; and EUR 40 for the medical examination some courses require. Coimbra's separate payment-plan page spreads a full-time annual fee across twelve instalments.

⚠️ Coimbra has published two different pictures: an older 2025/26 payment table built on EUR 7,000 a year for all courses, and the current fee table giving tuition from EUR 3,000. This page follows the current table and the university record explains the difference.

The University of Porto sets fees faculty by faculty and lists them per course, so no single figure is given here. Nationals of CPLP countries, Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe and East Timor, can receive a reduction of up to 45 per cent there.
