Coimbra admits non-EU students to its bachelor's and integrated master's degrees through a special contest under Portugal's International Student Statute, separate from the national access system, and runs it in phases rather than to a single deadline. The 2026/27 call had four application phases: 15 December 2025 to 26 January 2026, with results on 4 February; 16 February to 15 April, results on 23 April; 20 May to 20 July, results on 27 July; and 7 to 14 August, results on 24 August, each followed by a short period to register. Later phases only offer places left from earlier ones, so the first phase is the safe one. Applications are ranked in descending order of a final grade made from the admission examinations the course requires, each multiplied by its weighting, and Coimbra accepts several routes including Portuguese national admission exams, its own qualifying examinations and the Joint Admission Examination of Macao. Some courses carry prerequisites, such as a medical examination or a physical fitness check, assessed separately. The language requirement matters more than any of this: the degrees are taught in Portuguese and enrolment requires B2, though B1 applicants and, exceptionally, those below B1 can apply on condition of a Portuguese language course or foundation year. Dual nationals holding an EU and a non-EU nationality choose at application which status to use and cannot change it until the degree is finished.
