Admission at a glance

The University of Vienna runs one general application period each year for standard bachelor's and master's admission, opening in June for the following winter semester and in November for the following summer semester. Third-country nationals apply earlier than EU, EEA and Swiss citizens: for winter semester 2026/27 the window for third-country applicants ran from 22 June to 3 August 2026, while EU/EEA/Swiss applicants had until 5 September 2026. Bachelor's and diploma programmes that run an entrance exam or aptitude test, and a small number of master's programmes with a selection procedure, set their own separate and usually earlier deadlines and charge a EUR 50 administration fee per group of programmes; the general admission route does not state any application fee. Applicants submit their secondary school certificate or prior degree online, and the university checks case by case whether it gives the right to enter higher education in the country where it was issued; some countries, including Bangladesh, India and Pakistan, must also verify grades through VFS Global, and several others need an apostilled entrance exam certificate, while an Afghan secondary certificate alone is not accepted for bachelor's admission. Programmes taught in German ask for German proficiency starting from A2 for the language course route; English-taught bachelor's and master's programmes ask for a recognised English certificate, most commonly at B2 level, with some master's programmes asking for C1. All documents not already in German or English need a sworn translation, and originals need legalisation for the issuing country.

Requirements

Bachelor and diploma

A secondary school leaving certificate that gives direct entry to higher education in the country where it was issued. The university assesses each qualification individually; some countries need extra verification, for example Bangladesh, India and Pakistan through VFS Global, and several others an apostilled entrance exam certificate. Programmes taught in German need German proficiency; English-taught bachelor's programmes ask for English at B2 level. Programmes with an entrance exam or aptitude test set extra subject requirements and a EUR 50 administration fee.

Master

A completed bachelor's degree recognised as equivalent to an Austrian degree in a related field. Some master's programmes run a selection procedure with its own, usually earlier, deadline. The language requirement depends on the programme: some need German, some accept a recognised English certificate (commonly B2, some ask C1), and a few need proof in a third language.

PhD

A completed master's degree or equivalent, plus admission to a doctoral programme, which normally needs a supervisor's agreement before formal application.
