Requirements

Bachelor and diploma

A secondary school leaving certificate that gives direct entry to higher education in the country where it was issued. The university assesses each qualification individually; some countries need extra verification, for example Bangladesh, India and Pakistan through VFS Global, and several others an apostilled entrance exam certificate. Programmes taught in German need German proficiency; English-taught bachelor's programmes ask for English at B2 level. Programmes with an entrance exam or aptitude test set extra subject requirements and a EUR 50 administration fee.

Master

A completed bachelor's degree recognised as equivalent to an Austrian degree in a related field. Some master's programmes run a selection procedure with its own, usually earlier, deadline. The language requirement depends on the programme: some need German, some accept a recognised English certificate (commonly B2, some ask C1), and a few need proof in a third language.

PhD

A completed master's degree or equivalent, plus admission to a doctoral programme, which normally needs a supervisor's agreement before formal application.

Documents

Original secondary school leaving certificate or prior degree certificate, all pages, legalised for the issuing country (apostille where the country is party to the Hague Convention, otherwise consular legalisation). A sworn translation into German or English if the original is in another language. A recognised English or German language certificate where the programme requires one. For Bangladesh, India and Pakistan, grade verification through VFS Global. Passport copy and passport photo.

How to apply

1. Confirm the programme's language of instruction and whether it runs standard admission or an entrance exam/selection procedure.
2. Register online through the University of Vienna's application portal within the published window for your applicant group; third-country nationals apply earlier than EU/EEA/Swiss citizens.
3. Upload the secondary school or degree certificate, language certificate and any programme specific documents.
4. Pay the EUR 50 administration fee if the programme has an entrance exam or aptitude test.
5. Sit the entrance exam or complete the selection procedure where the programme requires one.
6. Receive the admission decision and complete enrolment (Zulassung) by the published deadline, including the tuition fee where it applies and the ÖH union fee.

English test waiver

Degree diploma and transcript of a full-time degree programme of at least two years, taught entirely in English at a university in the EU/EEA, Switzerland, the UK, the USA, Australia, New Zealand or Canada, can serve as proof instead of a test. Some master's programmes ask for C1 (IELTS 8.0 overall with at least 7.5 per component, or TOEFL iBT 110) instead of B2.
