University of Erlangen-Nuremberg Admission 2027: Deadlines, Requirements, Fees for International Students

Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is one of Germany's largest public universities, spread across Erlangen, Fürth and Nuremberg in Bavaria, with particular strength in engineering, natural sciences, medicine and business. FAU has so far been tuition-free, but from summer semester 2027 it will become the second Bavarian university, after TU Munich, to charge international students from outside the EU or EEA a tuition fee when they first enrol or change subjects: the amount depends on the programme and qualification level, running from EUR 1,000, 2,000 or 3,000 a semester for bachelor's degrees to EUR 2,000, 4,000 or 6,000 a semester for master's degrees. Non-EU students already enrolled before summer semester 2027, EU and EEA nationals, holders of a German university entrance qualification, doctoral candidates and exchange students are among those exempt. Separately, from winter semester 2026/27, FAU charges non-EU applicants a non-refundable processing fee of EUR 100 per application, capped at three applications, or EUR 300, per person per application phase. Applications run through the campo.fau.de portal, with each programme opening on its own start date; the main window for the summer semester 2027 intake runs from mid September 2026 to 15 January 2027. English requirements vary by programme, with CEFR B2, often stated as TOEFL iBT 80, as a common baseline for master's programmes taught in English.

Requirements

Bachelor's

Applicants need a higher education entrance qualification recognised as equivalent to the German Abitur. Most bachelor's programmes are taught in German and require German proficiency; a small number of English-taught bachelor's programmes, including Artificial Intelligence, exist and set their own English requirement.

Master's

Applicants need a relevant bachelor's degree. Depending on the programme, applicants need proof of German and/or English proficiency; a common baseline for English-taught master's programmes is CEFR B2, which several programmes state as TOEFL iBT 80, with some programmes asking for a higher C1 level instead. A bachelor's degree taught entirely in English can substitute for a separate certificate.
