University of Erlangen-Nuremberg Admission Requirements 2027 for International Students

Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is one of Germany's largest public universities, strong in engineering, natural sciences and medicine. As of summer semester 2027 it becomes the second Bavarian university to charge non-EU students tuition, from EUR 1,000 to EUR 6,000 a semester depending on the programme, alongside a new EUR 100 non-EU application processing fee.

Requirements

Bachelor's

Applicants need a higher education entrance qualification recognised as equivalent to the German Abitur. Most bachelor's programmes are taught in German and require German proficiency; a small number of English-taught bachelor's programmes, including Artificial Intelligence, exist and set their own English requirement.

Master's

Applicants need a relevant bachelor's degree. Depending on the programme, applicants need proof of German and/or English proficiency; a common baseline for English-taught master's programmes is CEFR B2, which several programmes state as TOEFL iBT 80, with some programmes asking for a higher C1 level instead. A bachelor's degree taught entirely in English can substitute for a separate certificate.

Documents

Certified copies of school and university certificates and transcripts, submitted through the campo.fau.de application portal; a certified translation if the originals are not in German or English; proof of German or English language proficiency depending on the programme; and confirmation of health insurance before enrolment. Non-EU applicants pay a non-refundable processing fee of EUR 100 per application, up to a maximum of three applications per application phase.

How to apply

Choose a bachelor's or master's programme and check its language requirement and application period on the relevant faculty page, since these differ by programme.
Register on the campo.fau.de application portal, where each programme opens for applications on its own start date.
Pay the EUR 100 non-EU application processing fee for each application, up to three per phase, if you are applying from a non-EU state.
Submit your application inside the programme's own window; for the summer semester the main window commonly opens in mid September and closes 15 January.
If admitted, pay the semester contribution and, from summer semester 2027, the non-EU tuition fee if it applies to you, arrange health insurance, and apply for a student visa if coming from outside the EU or EEA.
Enrol and register your address in Erlangen, Fürth or Nuremberg.

English test waiver

FAU does not publish one single university-wide score. TOEFL iBT 80 (on the 0 to 120 scale) is stated for several master's programmes as the practical equivalent of the general CEFR B2 requirement; some programmes ask for a higher C1 level instead. A bachelor's degree taught entirely in English can substitute for a separate certificate.
