FAU has been a tuition-free Bavarian public university, but from summer semester 2027 it will charge a tuition fee to non-EU students who enrol for the first time or change subjects, of EUR 1,000, 2,000 or 3,000 a semester for bachelor's degrees and EUR 2,000, 4,000 or 6,000 a semester for master's degrees, depending on the programme. Non-EU students already enrolled before summer semester 2027 are exempt, as are EU and EEA nationals, holders of a German university entrance qualification, doctoral candidates, exchange students and several other defined groups. Separately, from winter semester 2026/27, non-EU applicants pay a non-refundable EUR 100 processing fee per application, capped at three applications (EUR 300) per person per phase. All students also pay the standard semester contribution.
