The University of Göttingen is a public research university in Lower Saxony, founded in 1737, with strengths in the humanities, natural sciences, agricultural sciences, medicine and theology. Like other Lower Saxony public universities, it has charged no general tuition fee to any student, EU or non-EU, since the state abolished tuition in the winter semester of 2014/15; a handful of specialised joint and continuing-education master's programmes, such as the Erasmus Mundus Euroculture programme and some part-time or executive tracks, set their own separate programme fees that are unrelated to the general policy. Admission is decentralised: each bachelor's and master's programme sets its own application window rather than following one single university-wide date, and international applicants from China, India and Vietnam must also submit an APS certificate. A one-off evaluation fee of EUR 65 applies to the assessment of a foreign higher education entrance qualification for bachelor's applicants; no such fee applies to graduate admission. Applicants for programmes taught in German need proof of German proficiency, while programmes taught in English ask for an English certificate, though the required score varies by programme, from a B2-equivalent level up to IELTS Band 7 for some master's courses. All students pay a separate semester contribution to the regional student services organisation, which the university's own schedule set at EUR 127 from the winter semester of 2024/25, rising to EUR 157 from the summer semester of 2026.

Requirements

Bachelor's

Applicants need a higher education entrance qualification recognised as equivalent to the German Abitur. Applicants from China, India and Vietnam must submit an APS certificate alongside their application. Programmes taught in German require proof of German proficiency; the evaluation of a foreign qualification carries a one-off fee of EUR 65.

Master's

Applicants need a first academic degree equivalent to a German bachelor's degree in a related subject. Admission is set programme by programme: some master's programmes are open admission, others assess applicants competitively, and the language of instruction and its required proficiency level vary by programme.
