Requirements

Bachelor's

Applicants need a higher education entrance qualification recognised as equivalent to the German Abitur. Applicants from China, India and Vietnam must submit an APS certificate alongside their application. Programmes taught in German require proof of German proficiency; the evaluation of a foreign qualification carries a one-off fee of EUR 65.

Master's

Applicants need a first academic degree equivalent to a German bachelor's degree in a related subject. Admission is set programme by programme: some master's programmes are open admission, others assess applicants competitively, and the language of instruction and its required proficiency level vary by programme.

Documents

Certified copies of school and university certificates and transcripts, submitted through the university's online application system; a certified translation if the originals are not in German or English; an APS certificate for applicants from China, India and Vietnam; proof of language proficiency in German or English depending on the programme; and confirmation of health insurance before enrolment. Master's applicants also submit their bachelor's degree certificate or, if not yet complete, an official transcript of progress to date.

How to apply

  1. Choose a bachelor's or master's programme and check its own admission requirements and application window, since Göttingen does not use one single university-wide deadline.
  2. Register through the university's online application portal and upload certified copies of your educational certificates, language certificate and, if applicable, your APS certificate.
  3. Pay the EUR 65 evaluation fee if you are a bachelor's applicant with a foreign qualification.
  4. Submit your application inside the programme's own window.
  5. If admitted, confirm health insurance, pay the semester contribution, and apply for a student visa if you are coming from outside the EU or EEA.
  6. Enrol and register your address in Göttingen.

English test waiver

The required score depends on the programme: this reflects the C1-equivalent level asked by several master's programmes such as World Literature. Some programmes accept a lower B2-equivalent certificate (IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 81), and a few, including Modern Indian Studies, ask for IELTS Band 7. Applicants with a prior degree taught fully in English are generally exempt from a separate certificate.
