Admission at a glance

TUM is a state technical university with campuses in Munich, Garching and Freising, and a further campus in Heilbronn. It offers Bachelor's and Master's programmes across engineering, natural sciences, medicine and management, with a growing number taught fully in English at Master's level. Since the 2024/25 winter semester, TUM has charged non-EU international students who are not otherwise exempt a tuition fee: usually EUR 2,000 or EUR 3,000 a semester at Bachelor's level and EUR 4,000 or EUR 6,000 a semester at Master's level, with the exact figure set by the individual programme. All students, regardless of nationality, also pay a separate semester contribution to the student union, currently around EUR 97.

Admission is decentralised: each degree programme sets its own application window, required documents and, where relevant, aptitude test, rather than following one university-wide deadline. Most Master's programmes open their application period on 1 January or 1 April and close on 31 May for the following winter semester, though some restricted programmes close earlier. Applicants submit certified proof of their prior education through TUMonline, and non-EU applicants from some countries also need a preliminary document check through uni-assist. TUM offers waiver scholarships and one-off study grants of EUR 500 to EUR 1,800 a semester to help students facing the new fee.

Requirements

Bachelor's

Applicants need a higher education entrance qualification recognised as equivalent to the German Abitur; check the DAAD database or anabin before applying. English or German language proficiency is required depending on the programme, though six named programmes assess English through TUM's own aptitude test instead of a certificate.

Master's

Applicants need a first academic degree equivalent to a German Bachelor's, normally at least three years or six semesters long, in a related subject. Programme-specific admission rules can add further subject requirements, an aptitude assessment or a minimum grade.
