Technical University of Munich Admission Requirements 2027 for International Students

TUM is a public technical university in Munich and one of Germany's best known universities for engineering, natural sciences and technology management. It charges tuition to non-EU students, unlike most German public universities, and asks for a general English test unless the programme assesses language through its own aptitude test.

Requirements

Bachelor's

Applicants need a higher education entrance qualification recognised as equivalent to the German Abitur; check the DAAD database or anabin before applying. English or German language proficiency is required depending on the programme, though six named programmes assess English through TUM's own aptitude test instead of a certificate.

Master's

Applicants need a first academic degree equivalent to a German Bachelor's, normally at least three years or six semesters long, in a related subject. Programme-specific admission rules can add further subject requirements, an aptitude assessment or a minimum grade.

Documents

Authenticated copies of school and university certificates and transcripts, uploaded to TUMonline; a certified translation if the originals are not in German or English; a preliminary document check (VPD) from uni-assist for applicants from some countries; proof of language proficiency; and confirmation of health insurance before enrolment. Master's applicants also submit their Bachelor's degree certificate or, if not yet completed, an official transcript showing progress to date.

How to apply

Choose a Bachelor's or Master's programme and check its own admission requirements and deadlines, since TUM does not use one university-wide date.
Register on TUMonline and upload certified proof of your education, language certificate and any programme-specific documents.
Complete a preliminary document check with uni-assist first, if your country requires one.
Submit the application within the programme's own window, most commonly closing 31 May for the winter semester.
If admitted, pay the tuition fee (if applicable) and semester contribution, arrange health insurance, and apply for a student visa if coming from outside the EU/EEA.
Enrol at TUM and register your address in Munich, Garching, Freising or Heilbronn.

English test waiver

TUM does not always require a separate English certificate. Six named bachelor's programmes (Aerospace, Information Engineering, Management and Data Science, Management and Technology, Political Science, and Sustainable Management and Technology) assess English as part of the aptitude test instead. Applicants can also prove English through a previous degree taught at least half in English, or through the language of instruction of their prior school education.
