Freie Universitat Berlin is a public research university with particular strength in the humanities, social sciences, political science and area studies. Like the rest of Berlin's public higher education system, FU Berlin charges no tuition fee for regular Bachelor's and consecutive Master's programmes, for students of any nationality; a small number of continuing-education programmes, such as the Master in Business and Competition Law, set their own separate fee outside this general policy. All students pay a semester contribution, EUR 376.80 for the 2026/27 winter semester, which is mostly the cost of a public transport Semesterticket.

Applicants who completed their first degree outside Germany need a preliminary review of their qualification (VPD) from uni-assist before FU Berlin can process their Master's application; the VPD can be requested at any time, but FU Berlin advises applying well ahead of its own deadline, since only complete documents received by the deadline count, not the date the VPD was requested. The standard winter semester application window runs from mid-April to mid-August, though individual programmes can set their own dates within or around this period.

Requirements

Bachelor's

A higher education entrance qualification recognised as equivalent to the Abitur is required, assessed for foreign applicants via uni-assist.

Master's

A relevant Bachelor's degree is required. Consecutive Master's programmes need a preliminary review of the foreign qualification (VPD) from uni-assist before the FU Berlin application can be processed.
