Admission at a glance

Humboldt-Universitat zu Berlin (HU Berlin) is a public research university with a strong reputation in the humanities, social sciences, law and natural sciences. Unlike Bavaria and Baden-Wurttemberg, the state of Berlin has not introduced a tuition fee for non-EU students, so regular Bachelor's and consecutive Master's programmes remain free of tuition for every nationality; a small number of separately funded continuing-education programmes, such as certain LL.M. degrees, charge their own programme-specific fee outside this general policy. All students pay a semester contribution that includes a Germany-wide public transport ticket.

International applicants whose degree was not earned in Germany apply through uni-assist rather than directly to Humboldt. Uni-assist checks the foreign qualification and, once its evaluation is positive, forwards the application to the university, which then makes the admission decision. For the winter semester, the standard Master's application window runs for the whole of May, with the same cut-off deadline applying to EU/EEA and non-EU applicants alike; documents that arrive after the deadline are not considered, so applicants are advised to register with uni-assist well ahead of time.
