Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin Admission Requirements 2027

Humboldt University of Berlin is one of Germany's oldest and most prominent public research universities. Berlin has not introduced a general non-EU tuition fee, so regular Bachelor's and Master's programmes remain free of tuition, and applicants apply through the external service uni-assist.

Requirements

Bachelor's

A higher education entrance qualification recognised as equivalent to the Abitur is required, checked through uni-assist for applicants with a foreign qualification.

Master's

A relevant Bachelor's degree is required, along with proof of language skills and, for some programmes, a statement of purpose or subject-specific test. Individual programmes publish their own admission regulations (Zulassungsordnung) with any extra requirements.

Documents

Certified copies of school and degree certificates and transcripts, submitted to uni-assist for evaluation; a language certificate meeting the programme's required level; a CV and letter of motivation for many programmes. Uni-assist forwards a completed, positively evaluated application to Humboldt automatically.

How to apply

  1. Check whether your intended programme is offered in German or English and confirm its specific admission regulations.
  2. Register with uni-assist and submit certified copies of your qualifications for evaluation, well before Humboldt's own deadline.
  3. Once uni-assist forwards a positive evaluation, complete any programme-specific steps Humboldt requires.
  4. Wait for the admission decision from Humboldt.
  5. If admitted, apply for a student visa if coming from outside the EU/EEA, arrange health insurance, pay the semester contribution, and enrol.

English test waiver

Humboldt's general minimum for English-taught programmes is B2 level, met by IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL iBT 72 (Cambridge FCE, UNIcert II/III and a four-star DAAD language certificate are also accepted). A higher level, C1, helps an application and is required outright by some programmes, such as American Studies, which asks for IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 100.
