Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat Munchen (LMU) is a large public research university with faculties covering the humanities, sciences, medicine, law and economics. It has charged no tuition fee to any student, German or international, since the 2013/14 winter semester, funding its operations instead through state funding and a modest semester contribution to the Munich Studierendenwerk. Most Bachelor's programmes are taught in German, while a number of Master's and some Bachelor's programmes are taught fully in English.

International applicants without German nationality generally have to apply twice: once to the specific institute or programme, and separately to the International Office, since the two can run on different timetables. The university-wide deadline that the International Office publishes for programmes without a restricted number of places is 15 July for the winter semester and 15 January for the summer semester; missing either deadline means losing at least one full semester. A number of Master's programmes, including several science subjects, instead use a separate online portal called MoveIN with its own deadline. Restricted-admission subjects such as Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy go through a different national allocation process for EU applicants.

Requirements

Bachelor's

Most Bachelor's programmes are taught in German and require German language proficiency; a foreign school-leaving qualification must be recognised as equivalent, checked through the university's own assessment.

Master's

A relevant Bachelor's degree is required, with some programmes setting a minimum grade or requesting a statement of purpose. English-taught Master's programmes ask for an English certificate at a level set by the individual programme, commonly reaching C1.
