University of Hamburg Admission 2027: Deadlines, Requirements, Fees for International Students

Admission at a glance

The University of Hamburg (UHH) is a large public research university spanning the humanities, natural sciences, law, medicine and business. As a city-state university, Hamburg charges no separate tuition fee to non-EU international students; all students pay the same semester contribution, EUR 402 for the 2026/27 winter semester, covering the student body, a public transport semester ticket, a hardship fund for that ticket, the Studierendenwerk and university administration.

Hamburg changed its Master's application deadline starting with the 2025/26 winter semester: the standard window is now 1 May to 15 June for an October start, while the summer semester (April start) keeps its earlier window of 1 December to 15 January. A separate track for International Master's Programmes runs from 15 February to 31 March. English-language requirements are set by each programme rather than centrally: most programmes reviewed ask for IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL iBT around 70, though a subject taught as English itself asks for a higher IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 90, and at least one quantitative programme accepts a lower score.

Requirements

Bachelor's / Staatsexamen

A higher education entrance qualification recognised as equivalent to the Abitur is required; most Bachelor's programmes are taught in German.

Master's

A relevant first degree is required. Each programme sets its own English or German language requirement in its admission regulations.
