Admission at a glance

The University of Münster, formally the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität, is one of Germany's largest public universities, with strong faculties in theology, law, medicine, the natural sciences and business. It charges no tuition fee to any student, EU or non-EU, for its regular degree programmes; the only exception is a small number of in-service continuing education courses. All students pay a semester contribution of approximately EUR 370 at the start of each term, which covers the regional semester ticket and student services. Admission for non-EU applicants to restricted first-semester bachelor's programmes for the winter semester closes earlier, on 31 May, than the 15 July deadline that applies to EU applicants and to unrestricted bachelor's programmes; master's programmes generally follow the same 15 July closing date for all applicants regardless of nationality. Language requirements are set by the individual degree programme rather than centrally: German-taught programmes, which make up most of the bachelor's offering, require a German certificate, while English-taught master's programmes set their own English test score, ranging from a B2-equivalent level in some technical subjects up to a much higher requirement in the English department itself. Non-EU bachelor's applicants normally need a preliminary document review from uni-assist before they can apply to the university directly.

Requirements

Bachelor's

Applicants need a higher education entrance qualification recognised as equivalent to the German Abitur. Most bachelor's programmes are taught in German and require proof of German proficiency; a small number of English-taught bachelor's programmes exist and set their own English requirement.

Master's

Applicants need a relevant first academic degree equivalent to a German bachelor's degree. Language requirements are set by the individual programme: German-taught programmes ask for a German certificate, English-taught programmes for an English certificate, most commonly around CEFR B2 to C1 depending on the subject.
