Admission at a glance

The University of Freiburg is a public research university with eleven faculties and around 240 degree programmes. Under Baden-Wurttemberg state law, it charges non-EU/EEA international students without a German university entrance qualification EUR 1,500 a semester for state examination, Bachelor's and consecutive Master's study, on top of the regular semester fee; a broad set of exemptions applies, including students with a German entrance qualification earned in Germany, EU/EEA family members, holders of a permanent German residence permit, refugees, doctoral candidates and Erasmus exchange students.

Deadlines differ sharply by programme type. Open-admission (zulassungsfrei) Bachelor's subjects accept applications from 1 December through to shortly before the semester starts, for example 8 October for the 2026 winter semester and 9 April for the summer semester. Master's and other postgraduate programmes do not follow one university-wide date; each sets its own deadline, published in Freiburg's degree programme finder, so applicants need to check their specific subject rather than relying on a single university deadline. English-taught programmes ask for a certificate at the CEFR level the programme's own admission regulations specify, most often B2.

Requirements

Bachelor's

Open-admission subjects require only a recognised higher education entrance qualification and can be applied for through most of the year; other subjects apply a Numerus Clausus and a fixed deadline.

Master's

A relevant Bachelor's degree is required. Each Master's programme publishes its own admission regulations and deadline through the degree programme finder rather than following one university-wide date.
