Kiel University, formally the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU), is a public university in Schleswig-Holstein recognised particularly for marine and ocean sciences alongside law, medicine and the humanities. It charges no tuition fee to international students; the fee policy applies equally regardless of nationality, and the only charges involved are the standard semester contribution, which the university's International Center states at EUR 403 for the winter semester of 2026/27, and a separate one-time enrolment fee of EUR 55 charged when a student enrols for the first time. Most courses at Kiel are taught in German, and only a limited number of master's programmes are fully taught in English. For master's programmes generally, the university states IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 79 as its standard English requirement, though a bachelor's degree taught entirely in English, or at least four years of school English graded satisfactory or better, can substitute for a formal test certificate. International applicants generally apply through uni-assist, which reviews foreign qualifications before the university's own admission process. The published application period for master's programmes runs from the beginning of May to 15 July for the winter semester and from the beginning of November to 15 January for the summer semester.

Requirements

Bachelor's

Applicants need a higher education entrance qualification recognised as equivalent to the German Abitur. Most bachelor's programmes are taught in German and require German proficiency.

Master's

Applicants need a relevant bachelor's degree and a recognised higher education entrance qualification, with no more than 30 ECTS credits or one semester remaining if the degree is not yet complete. English-taught programmes generally ask for IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 79, though a bachelor's degree taught in English, or at least four years of school English graded satisfactory or better, can substitute for a test certificate.
