Admission at a glance
Heidelberg University is a public research university with strengths across the humanities, natural sciences and medicine. Since the state of Baden-Wurttemberg introduced non-EU tuition from the 2017/18 winter semester, Heidelberg has charged international students from outside the EU and EEA who hold a foreign university entrance qualification EUR 1,500 a semester for Bachelor's, Staatsexamen and consecutive Master's study; the university can exempt up to five percent of incoming international students, around twenty a year, on academic grounds. All students also pay a semester contribution, currently EUR 189.80.
Almost all Master's programmes at Heidelberg carry some form of admission restriction, either a fixed number of places (zulassungsbeschrankt) or an open but formal admission procedure (zugangsbeschrankt), so there is no single unrestricted intake. Deadlines vary by programme and by category: many close in spring for an October start, with some subjects such as Psychology and Molecular Biosciences closing as early as mid-March. Applications for standard consecutive Master's programmes go to the Akademisches Auslandsamt (International Relations Office), while continuing-education Master's programmes are handled directly by the offering department.

Requirements
Bachelor's / Staatsexamen
A higher education entrance qualification recognised as equivalent to the Abitur is required; foreign qualifications are assessed by Heidelberg's Admissions Office using the proposals of the German Central Office for Foreign Education.
Master's
A relevant Bachelor's degree is required. Programmes with admission restriction (zulassungsbeschrankt) rank applicants competitively when there are more qualified candidates than places; programmes with access restriction (zugangsbeschrankt) admit every applicant who meets the published criteria, provided they apply in time.
