University of Freiburg Admission Requirements 2026

The University of Freiburg is a public research university in Baden-Wurttemberg and, like other state universities there, charges non-EU international students EUR 1,500 a semester. Open-admission Bachelor's programmes accept applications through most of the year, while Master's and restricted-admission programmes set their own deadlines by subject.

Requirements

Bachelor's

Open-admission subjects require only a recognised higher education entrance qualification and can be applied for through most of the year; other subjects apply a Numerus Clausus and a fixed deadline.

Master's

A relevant Bachelor's degree is required. Each Master's programme publishes its own admission regulations and deadline through the degree programme finder rather than following one university-wide date.

Documents

Proof of your higher education entrance qualification, recognised as equivalent where earned outside Germany; a language certificate at the CEFR level your programme requires; and any subject-specific documents listed in that programme's own admission regulations. How to apply

Use the degree programme finder to check whether your subject has open or restricted admission, and its specific deadline.
Prepare your language certificate at the CEFR level required (commonly B2 for English-taught programmes) and your qualification documents.
Apply within the relevant window: open-admission Bachelor's subjects accept applications from 1 December until shortly before the semester starts; Master's and restricted subjects follow their own published deadline.
If admitted, pay the semester fee and, if you are a non-EU/EEA student without a German entrance qualification, the EUR 1,500 tuition fee.
Arrange health insurance, apply for a student visa if coming from outside the EU/EEA, and enrol in Freiburg.

English test waiver

Freiburg organises its English requirement by CEFR level rather than one fixed score: B1 needs IELTS 4.0-5.0 or TOEFL iBT 44-71; B2 needs IELTS 5.5-6.5 or TOEFL iBT 72-94; C1 needs IELTS 7.0-8.0 or TOEFL iBT 95 or more. The level required depends on the specific programme's own admission regulations.
