University of Münster Admission Requirements 2027 for International Students

The University of Münster (WWU) is one of Germany's largest public universities, known for theology, law, medicine and the natural sciences. It charges no tuition fee to international students and asks for an English or German language certificate depending on the programme.

Requirements

Bachelor's

Applicants need a higher education entrance qualification recognised as equivalent to the German Abitur. Most bachelor's programmes are taught in German and require proof of German proficiency; a small number of English-taught bachelor's programmes exist and set their own English requirement.

Master's

Applicants need a relevant first academic degree equivalent to a German bachelor's degree. Language requirements are set by the individual programme: German-taught programmes ask for a German certificate, English-taught programmes for an English certificate, most commonly around CEFR B2 to C1 depending on the subject.

Documents

Certified copies of school and university certificates and transcripts, submitted through the university's own application portal or, for many programmes, through uni-assist; a certified translation if the originals are not in German or English; proof of German or English language proficiency depending on the programme; and confirmation of health insurance before enrolment. Non-EU bachelor's applicants normally need a preliminary review of their qualification through uni-assist before applying.

How to apply

Choose a bachelor's or master's programme and check its own admission requirements, since language and English test requirements differ by subject.
If applying for a bachelor's degree as a non-EU applicant, obtain a preliminary document review from uni-assist before the university deadline.
Submit your application through the university's portal inside the stated window; non-EU applicants to restricted first-semester bachelor's programmes for the winter semester must apply earlier, by 31 May, than EU applicants.
Upload certified copies of your certificates, transcripts and language certificate.
If admitted, pay the semester contribution, arrange health insurance, and apply for a student visa if coming from outside the EU or EEA.
Enrol and register your address in Münster.

English test waiver

The required score is set by each programme. This reflects the Public Policy master's requirement; Economics asks for a higher IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 95, some mathematics-related programmes accept a B2-equivalent IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 72, and English department programmes ask for IELTS 7.5 or higher. Applicants with a prior degree taught fully in English are usually exempt.
