Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München Admission Requirements 2027

LMU Munich is one of Germany's largest and oldest public universities and charges no tuition fee to any student, regardless of nationality. Admission and English requirements are set separately by each institute, so applicants need to check both the university-wide International Office deadline and their chosen programme's own rules.

Requirements

Bachelor's

Most Bachelor's programmes are taught in German and require German language proficiency; a foreign school-leaving qualification must be recognised as equivalent, checked through the university's own assessment.

Master's

A relevant Bachelor's degree is required, with some programmes setting a minimum grade or requesting a statement of purpose. English-taught Master's programmes ask for an English certificate at a level set by the individual programme, commonly reaching C1.

Documents

Certified copies of school and degree certificates and transcripts, with certified translations if not in German or English; a language certificate matching the programme's language of instruction; and, for many programmes, a CV and letter of motivation. Applicants use the International Office's own registration alongside the specific programme's application.

How to apply

Choose a programme and confirm whether it uses the general International Office application or the separate MoveIN portal.
Check your qualification's recognition and prepare the required language certificate.
Apply to the specific institute or programme and, separately, register with the International Office where required, before the relevant deadline.
If admitted, arrange health insurance, apply for a student visa if coming from outside the EU/EEA, and pay the semester contribution.
Enrol in person during the enrolment period and register your address in Munich.

English test waiver

LMU sets its own English requirement for each English-taught programme rather than one university-wide minimum; requirements seen on programme pages range from about 72 to 100 on the TOEFL iBT and from about 6.0 to 7.0 on IELTS. Most Bachelor's programmes are taught in German and instead ask for a German test.
