Debrecen admits international students on its own entrance examination, held in English, rather than through a national application system. For medical and health science programmes the examination is a written paper in biology, chemistry and physics followed by a compulsory oral interview; for the non-medical programmes it covers English and the subjects relevant to the chosen degree. During the oral interview the committee tests the applicant's English along with their motivation and their previous education, and bachelor's and master's candidates should expect questions about their plans as well as their subject. There are two intakes. Applications for a January or February start close on 1 November, and applications for the following September close in the middle of May, with doctoral programmes running about a month ahead of the rest in the most recent cycle. Popular programmes can close earlier than the published date: Debrecen stopped accepting Medicine and Dentistry applications for the September 2026 intake before the deadline because of the number of applications received, and said the September 2027 round would open later in 2026 with a final deadline of 15 May 2027. Applications go through the university's own online platform with a school leaving certificate or degree in English, a transcript, a CV, and the bank receipt for the USD 150 application fee. An incomplete application is not processed. Stipendium Hungaricum applicants sit their entrance examinations on a separate timetable, after their country nominates them, and should ignore the published examination calendar.
