Cost of Studying in Hungary (2027) for International Students

Hungary is one of the few places in Europe where a foreign student can read medicine, dentistry or pharmacy in English at a state university, and the degrees are recognised across the European Union. There is no national tuition rate: at the University of Debrecen the 2026/27 range runs from USD 5,500 a year to USD 17,500 for dentistry. Admission is by the university's own entrance examination rather than a central system, and the Hungarian government's Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship covers tuition in full for nominated applicants.

There is no national tuition rate in Hungary. Each university sets its own, in US dollars or euros depending on the institution, and the spread inside one university is wide.

The University of Debrecen's 2026/27 table is a good picture of the range. Degree programmes run from USD 5,500 a year for Social Work in Health Care and Social Work and Social Economics, through USD 6,000 for a Public Health bachelor's and USD 6,500 for Biology and most doctoral schools, to USD 7,000 for Computer Science, Agribusiness, Business Administration, Commerce and Marketing, Business Informatics, Food Engineering and several other engineering bachelor's degrees, and USD 7,500 for Civil, Mechanical, Mechatronics and Environmental Engineering, Nursing, and most master's programmes. Pharmacy is USD 8,000, Molecular Biology USD 8,500, Food Sciences USD 9,800, doctoral Mechanical Engineering USD 10,000, Management and Business USD 12,500, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Artificial Intelligence USD 16,000. Medicine is USD 16,900 a year over twelve semesters and Dentistry USD 17,500 over ten.

Preparatory and language courses are priced per course rather than per year: an International Foundation Year is USD 6,000, the version for music USD 7,000, an English Language Course USD 6,000, an Intensive Foundation Semester USD 4,800 and a short English course USD 3,000.

Two fees come before tuition. Debrecen charges a non-refundable application fee of USD 150 and an entrance examination fee of USD 350, both paid by bank transfer with the applicant's name and date of birth in the reference. Where a programme's tuition is below USD 10,000 the university requires the whole year's tuition and a general deposit before it will issue the documents needed for a visa, so the real first payment is larger than the fee table suggests. Debrecen states that health insurance, the medical check and the student card are included in the tuition.

The two other big medical faculties price in the same band but not in the same currency, which is worth checking before comparing. The University of Pécs charges USD 16,750 a year for General Medicine starting in 2027/28 and USD 17,350 for Dentistry, with dental materials included, but quotes its Faculty of Pharmacy in euros at EUR 8,400 a year and its Biotechnology BSc at EUR 7,000. Its one-time application fee is USD 200, waived for PharmD and Biotechnology BSc applicants, with a USD 220 registration fee due alongside the first semester's tuition and a USD 250 examination fee where the examination is held in Pécs. The University of Szeged quotes entirely in euros: General Medicine EUR 15,800 a year and the Foundation Year EUR 6,800, with an EUR 800 deposit inside the first semester and a single EUR 300 fee covering both the application and the entrance examination for up to three programmes. Szeged also runs three separate EUR 300 reductions, for early admission by 30 April, for siblings, and for the children of graduates.

Semmelweis in Budapest charges by semester rather than by year: USD 10,450 a semester for General Medicine and Dentistry, USD 6,620 for Pharmaceutical Sciences, and EUR 4,050 for the Nursing BSc at its Faculty of Health Sciences. Its one-time fees are the largest of the four and worth planning for: a USD 400 admission procedure fee at application, a USD 2,000 deposit due within fourteen days of the admission notice, and a USD 230 enrolment fee. The deposit is non-refundable but is deducted from the first semester's tuition, so it is a prepayment rather than a loss for anyone who takes the place up.
