How to Apply to Universities in Hungary (2027): Step by Step

Hungary is one of the few places in Europe where a foreign student can read medicine, dentistry or pharmacy in English at a state university, and the degrees are recognised across the European Union. There is no national tuition rate: at the University of Debrecen the 2026/27 range runs from USD 5,500 a year to USD 17,500 for dentistry. Admission is by the university's own entrance examination rather than a central system, and the Hungarian government's Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship covers tuition in full for nominated applicants.

Degree programmes taught in English

  1. Choose the university and the programme first, because Hungary has no central admission system for international students and every university runs its own examination and its own calendar.
  2. Check which intake you are aiming for. The University of Debrecen has a January or February start with applications closing on 1 November, and a September start with applications closing in the middle of May.
  3. Do not wait for the deadline on a medical programme. Debrecen closed Medicine and Dentistry for the September 2026 intake before the deadline because of the volume of applications.
  4. Prepare the English evidence your university actually asks for. Debrecen tests English inside its own entrance examination and interview, both conducted in English. Pécs asks for a certificate, accepting IELTS 6.0 with no skill below 5.5, TOEFL iBT 90, PTE Academic 59 or Duolingo 115 among many others, and then tests again by interview for its medical, health, pharmacy and engineering faculties.
  5. Apply on the university's own platform and pay the application fee. Debrecen charges USD 150 plus a USD 350 entrance examination fee; Pécs and Szeged both run on DreamApply, where Pécs charges a one-time USD 200 application fee plus USD 250 per examination taken in Pécs, and Szeged charges a single EUR 300 covering the application and the examination for up to three programmes.
  6. Sit the entrance examination or interview. For medicine at Debrecen it is a written paper in biology, chemistry and physics and then an oral interview. Szeged publishes its format in detail: twenty multiple choice questions each in Biology, Chemistry and English Language, then a twenty minute Zoom interview with a professor in English. Szeged also exempts applicants holding an International Baccalaureate diploma, GCE A2 level certificates or a bachelor's degree.
  7. Pay the tuition when the conditional acceptance arrives. The letter of admission, which is what a residence permit application needs, is issued only after the money is received, and where tuition is under USD 10,000 the full year plus a deposit is due before the visa documents are released.

Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship

  1. Check whether your country has a bilateral agreement with Hungary, because the programme runs through those agreements rather than being open to everyone.
  2. Find your sending partner, usually the ministry responsible for education or the Hungarian embassy, and find its own deadline, which comes earlier than the Hungarian one.
  3. Apply in both places. The application goes to the Hungarian online system and to the sending partner, with the documents each requires.
  4. Watch for the call. The 2026/27 round closed at 14:00 Central European Time on 15 January 2026, and the next call had not been published in early September 2026.
  5. Wait for nomination before booking an entrance examination. Scholarship applicants are given their own examination dates after their country nominates them, and the dates published for fee paying applicants do not apply to them.
