Middle East Technical University Admission 2027

Middle East Technical University (METU, known locally as ODTU) is a public research university in Ankara that teaches almost entirely in English. International undergraduates apply through their own quota, assessed on SAT, TR-YOS or a small number of other accepted exams and diplomas rather than the exam Turkish citizens sit, and tuition is set as a low, government linked annual fee rather than a market rate.

Admission at a glance

METU admits international undergraduates outside the exam Turkish nationals sit, through a quota governed by the Council of Higher Education's general principles and METU's own directive for international student applications. Eligibility depends on citizenship and where an applicant completed secondary school: candidates who hold Republic of Turkiye or TRNC citizenship, or who completed any part of secondary school inside Turkiye or the TRNC, are generally not eligible for this quota and are directed to the domestic admission process instead. Eligible applicants are assessed on one of a defined list of exams and diplomas, which includes TR-YOS, SAT, QUDURAT and TQDK among others, each with its own minimum score set out in METU's published requirements document; scores are valid for two years, while a high school diploma itself does not expire. Admission is competitive: METU receives applications from students in around 100 countries for a limited number of places, and meeting the minimum score does not guarantee a place, since the university runs a holistic review on top of the exam result. English proficiency is not required to apply, though a valid TOEFL, PTE or IELTS score can support an application, and every admitted student who has not already cleared the requirement sits METU's own English Proficiency Exam at registration. Tuition is charged in US dollars but billed in Turkish lira, converted at the Central Bank's selling rate roughly a week before each semester's payment window, and is one of the lower international tuition levels among Turkiye's best known public universities.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree

Open only to applicants who are not Republic of Turkiye or TRNC citizens and who did not complete secondary education inside Turkiye or the TRNC. Applicants must satisfy the minimum score on at least one exam or diploma from METU's accepted list, which includes TR-YOS, SAT, QUDURAT and TQDK; exam and diploma results are valid for two years from the exam date. A completed high school diploma equivalent to a Turkish high school diploma is required. English proficiency is not required for the application itself.

Graduate

Graduate admission runs through METU's Graduate School system by department rather than the International Students Office undergraduate route, and generally asks for a relevant bachelor's or master's degree plus, for programmes taught in English, a METU English Proficiency Exam score of 70 or an equivalent TOEFL iBT score of 79.
