Both of these universities are in Ankara, both teach in English, and one costs about ten times the other. Middle East Technical University is public and charges international undergraduates USD 1,600 to 2,400 a year depending on faculty. Bilkent is private and charges USD 16,300 to 18,400 a year including the ten percent tax, with the rate depending on the year a student was admitted. That gap is the single biggest fact in this comparison and it is a difference of ownership, not of teaching language. They also handle English differently. METU does not require a test to apply at all: an applicant may submit IELTS, TOEFL or PTE to strengthen a file, but it is optional at the application stage. Bilkent asks for IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 87, and an applicant who has neither may instead sit Bilkent's own Proficiency in Academic English exam after arriving and registering. METU dates from 1956 and Bilkent from 1984, when it became the country's first private university.
