Requirements
Bachelor's degree
Open only to applicants who are not Republic of Turkiye or TRNC citizens and who did not complete secondary education inside Turkiye or the TRNC. Applicants must satisfy the minimum score on at least one exam or diploma from METU's accepted list, which includes TR-YOS, SAT, QUDURAT and TQDK; exam and diploma results are valid for two years from the exam date. A completed high school diploma equivalent to a Turkish high school diploma is required. English proficiency is not required for the application itself.
Graduate
Graduate admission runs through METU's Graduate School system by department rather than the International Students Office undergraduate route, and generally asks for a relevant bachelor's or master's degree plus, for programmes taught in English, a METU English Proficiency Exam score of 70 or an equivalent TOEFL iBT score of 79.
Documents
High school diploma or an equivalent certificate recognised as equal to a Turkish high school diploma. Official exam or diploma result (TR-YOS, SAT or another accepted exam) within its two year validity. Passport copy. Any additional certificates an applicant wants considered, including an English proficiency score, submitted through the application system's Additional Certificates section. The full requirements and exact document list are published in METU's undergraduate application directive and requirements document on the International Students Office site.
How to apply
- Confirm eligibility for the international student quota on the International Students Office site: the quota is closed to Republic of Turkiye or TRNC citizens and to anyone who completed secondary school inside Turkiye or the TRNC.
- Sit an accepted exam, such as TR-YOS or SAT, or hold another accepted diploma, within its two year validity window.
- Apply online within METU's published application period; the 2026-2027 cycle ran from 1 June to 12 July 2026.
- Wait for the result of the holistic review; a minimum score does not guarantee a place, since places are limited against a large applicant pool.
- If admitted, register in the semester offered and pay tuition, billed in Turkish lira at that semester's Central Bank selling rate.
- Sit the METU English Proficiency Exam at registration unless an accepted TOEFL, PTE or IELTS (dated before 24 December 2022) score is already on file; a pass of 60 or higher clears the requirement, otherwise the first year is spent in the English Preparatory Programme.
- After registering, apply for a residence permit through e-ikamet and submit documents to the International Students Office on the following Thursday collection slot.
English test waiver
English proficiency is not mandatory to apply for undergraduate programmes. Applicants may submit a TOEFL, PTE Academic or IELTS score to strengthen their file, but IELTS results dated on or after 24 December 2022 are not accepted under a University Senate decision. Anyone admitted without an accepted score sits the METU English Proficiency Exam (METU-EPE) at registration; the passing score is 60 for all undergraduate programmes except the dual diploma programmes with the State University of New York and the Teaching English as a Foreign Language programme. Students who do not pass attend a one year English Preparatory Programme in the Department of Basic English before starting their degree.
