Admission at a glance
The Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (unibz) sets a distinct application track for non-EU citizens living abroad who need a study visa: they may apply only during the university's Early Bird Application window, generally open from March to April, rather than during the later rounds open to EU citizens and non-EU residents of Italy. The non-refundable application fee is EUR 50. Tuition for these students is approximately EUR 1,200 a year, paid in two instalments; the university's own cost estimate pages describe a minimum total cost of about EUR 36,000 for a full bachelor's degree and EUR 24,000 for a full master's degree once tuition and typical living costs are combined, and note that non-EU students living in the Bozen-Bolzano area should budget at least EUR 800 a month for accommodation, food and other living expenses. After receiving an offer, applicants must pay the first tuition instalment to secure their place, submit their qualification documents for verification, and then start the visa process through the Ministry's Universitaly portal. unibz teaches across three languages: Italian, German and English. Most master's programmes, including Software Engineering, Computing for Data Science, Environmental Management of Mountain Areas and Food Sciences for Innovation and Authenticity, are taught only in English and require B2-level proficiency; several bachelor's and other master's programmes instead follow a trilingual model requiring B2 in at least two of Italian, German and English. The university's own Language Centre hosts IELTS Academic test sittings and recognises IELTS among other certificates, but the applicant-facing pages read for this record did not state a fixed minimum band score, so no numeric English figure is recorded.
