Italy Student Visa (2027): Requirements, Proof of Funds, Fee, Processing Time

What you need

A valid passport with at least three months' validity beyond the visa and two blank pages, a completed and signed national visa application form, a recent passport photo, proof of enrolment or pre-enrolment (the university admission or Universitaly pre-enrolment summary), proof of accommodation in Italy, a return or onward flight reservation, proof of financial means of EUR 10,179.85 for the academic year (shown through bank statements, normally the last three months, plus salary slips or a notarised parental affidavit if a parent is providing support), and travel medical insurance valid across the Schengen area with a minimum of EUR 30,000 emergency coverage.

How to apply

1. Complete pre-enrolment for the chosen degree programme on the Universitaly portal; the university must validate this before a visa application can proceed.
2. Submit the visa application and supporting documents to the competent Italian consulate for the applicant's place of residence; some consulates require registration through the Prenot@mi appointment system first.
3. Attend an in-person appointment for fingerprinting and document verification when the consulate schedules one; being called for fingerprinting does not guarantee the visa will be granted.
4. Wait for processing, which one consulate states takes between 45 and 90 business days.
5. After arriving in Italy, apply for the permesso di soggiorno (residence permit) within eight days, at a Poste Italiane office offering the service.
