Study in United Kingdom: Admission, Cost, Visa and Scholarships (2027)

The United Kingdom's higher education system is built around bachelor's degrees, usually three years long in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and four years in Scotland, taught master's degrees, usually one year, and research degrees (MPhil and PhD) that typically run three to four years. Universities are self-governing institutions. Almost every well known university, including every one in this dataset, is a public, not-for-profit body rather than a commercial business, though a small number of private providers also operate in the country. The academic year normally starts in September or October and is divided into terms or semesters. A smaller January intake exists at some universities, mainly for specific foundation and master's programmes, but the main entry point for nearly all bachelor's degrees is the autumn term.

Undergraduate applications for almost every UK university go through UCAS, the shared national application service, rather than to each university separately. An applicant completes one UCAS form, writes a single personal statement that covers every course choice, and can list up to five choices in one application. Two deadlines matter for entry in 2027: 15 October 2026, 18:00 UK time, for the universities of Oxford and Cambridge and for most courses in medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine or science at any UK university, and 13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time, the equal consideration deadline for every other undergraduate course. Applications submitted after the January deadline can sometimes still be added to UCAS later in the cycle, through Extra or Clearing, but are no longer guaranteed equal consideration alongside applications that arrived on time. Postgraduate applications are almost always made directly to the university's own application system, either against a programme specific deadline or on a rolling basis until places are filled, rather than through UCAS.

International (non-UK, non-Irish) tuition fees are set by each university individually and vary by subject. Classroom based arts, humanities, law and social science courses are normally the cheapest; laboratory based science, engineering and computing courses cost more; clinical courses such as medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine are the most expensive, sometimes two to three times the humanities rate. A university usually fixes the fee for a student's whole course at the rate current in their year of entry, so it does not rise with inflation for continuing students on that rate, though this policy varies by institution.

English language proficiency is normally demonstrated with IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic or a small number of other tests each university names on its own website; the required score depends heavily on the course and the university, and commonly ranges from around IELTS 6.0 for some subjects up to 7.5 for the most selective courses.

Living costs vary sharply by location, with London markedly more expensive than the rest of the country. Students on the Student visa route may work part time during term and full time during vacations, and many move onto the Graduate visa after finishing their course to work in the UK for a further period without first needing a job offer.
