IIT Bombay, established in 1958 in the northern suburbs of Mumbai, had 13,366 students in 2025-26, including 6,227 undergraduates and 3,620 PhD scholars. Foreign nationals pay tuition of Rs 3,00,000 a semester for undergraduate study in 2026-27. For master's study the rate is Rs 1,70,000 a semester, or Rs 85,000 for students from SAARC countries including Bangladesh.

International degree students at IIT Bombay can apply through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarship, the Government of India's Study in India programme, which awards scholarships and tuition fee waivers for meritorious master's and PhD applicants, the ASEAN doctoral fellowship, and the DAAD In-Region Scholarship Programme for graduates from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka. A very limited number of tuition fee waivers may be given to exceptional doctoral students. Scholarship holders under a tuition concession pay Rs 18,000 a semester for master's and Rs 3,750 for PhD study.
