Study in Slovakia: Admission, Cost, Visa and Scholarships (2027)

Slovakia draws many international students to medicine taught in English. Comenius University in Bratislava, the country's oldest university, teaches General Medicine and Dentistry in English at its Faculty of Medicine in Bratislava, and General Medicine at its Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin. Both admit students through written entrance examinations in biology and chemistry, held online several times a year, rather than on school grades alone. The Faculty of Medicine in Bratislava does not require an English language certificate.

Fees are set in the university's official fee schedule. For 2026-27 General Medicine in English costs EUR 13,000 a year and Dentistry EUR 14,500 at the Faculty of Medicine in Bratislava, and the same tuition applies for every year of the standard programme length. The Jessenius Faculty charges EUR 11,500 a year for General Medicine. Non-medical English programmes are far cheaper: EUR 1,800 for a master's at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics, EUR 2,000 to EUR 3,999 for Law bachelor's programmes in English, and EUR 7,500 for Pharmacy. Application fees are EUR 99 at the Faculty of Medicine in Bratislava and EUR 70 at the Jessenius Faculty.

Medicine deadlines come early for non-EU applicants because of the visa process. For 2026-27 the Faculty of Medicine in Bratislava advised applicants from outside the EU to take only the March or June exam. The Jessenius Faculty has published its 2027-28 dates already: exams on 20 March, 26 June and 6 August 2027, with application deadlines of 6 March, 12 June and 23 July 2027, and applications opening on 1 December 2026.

A student from outside the EU applies for temporary residence for the purpose of study, in person at a Slovak embassy abroad or at a foreign police department if already legally in Slovakia. No administrative fee is charged for the application, only for issuing the residence card, EUR 10 within 30 days or EUR 39 within two working days. The permit can last up to six years. Students must take out health insurance within three working days of receiving the residence card and hand in a medical report within 30 days. A university student may work up to 80 hours a month in total without a work permit, and after graduating can have the permit renewed for nine months to look for work or start a business.
