Admission at a glance
Yokohama National University, YNU, is a national university south of Tokyo with faculties in urban sciences, economics, business administration, education, engineering science and international social sciences. Its flagship English-medium undergraduate route is the YOKOHAMA Socrates Program, formally the YNU Program for Socially Resilient and Sustainable Ecosystems, launched in April 2024 inside the Department of Urban and Social Collaboration in the College of Urban Sciences. The programme is described as bilingual, with English as the primary language of instruction and Japanese as a secondary one, and it selects students through submitted documents, an essay and an online interview rather than a written entrance exam. YNU also lists degree programmes taught fully in English at graduate level, including master's routes in mechanical engineering, materials science, ocean engineering, chemistry and life science, mathematics and physics, and infrastructure management, plus doctoral routes in economics, business administration, transnational law and several engineering and science fields. Each of these graduate routes sets its own application period and requirements, so applicants need to check the specific programme page. Tuition across YNU follows the national university standard rate for both undergraduate and graduate international students.
