Admission at a glance

Meiji University is one of Tokyo's largest private universities, with faculties spanning law, commerce, political science and economics, literature, science and engineering, agriculture and information communication. Its School of Global Japanese Studies runs an English Track that lets students earn a bachelor's degree in Japanese studies, covering history, society, language and culture, entirely in English; Japanese language ability is not required to enter, though students take Japanese language classes as part of the degree. Meiji requires every applicant to the English Track to submit an official English proficiency score report, accepting TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic, Cambridge English Qualifications, SAT or ACT, and states plainly that there is no waiver for this requirement, even for native English speakers or applicants educated entirely in English. From the 2026 academic year, the School of Global Japanese Studies moved its English Track intake to September only, dropping the April entry it previously offered. Meiji also runs a small number of English-medium graduate programmes, including a Global MBA at Meiji Business School and international routes at the Graduate School of Global Governance, each with its own separate application process and fee schedule. Tuition for the School of Global Japanese Studies follows its own faculty-specific fee schedule rather than the general national university rate, since Meiji is a private institution.
