Admission at a glance

Doshisha University is one of Kyoto's oldest private universities, founded on Christian principles in the nineteenth century, with faculties covering law, economics, commerce, theology and letters, plus dedicated Global Communications and Global and Regional Studies programmes. Its clearest fully English-medium undergraduate route is the Institute for the Liberal Arts, ILA, which awards a Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Arts through subjects taught entirely in English. ILA candidates typically hold an IB score of 32 or above, an SAT score of 1300 or above, an ACT score of 25 or above, or three GCE A-levels, alongside an IELTS Academic score of 6.5, an equivalent TOEFL iBT score, or a Duolingo English Test score of 120; test requirements are waived for native English speakers and applicants with 12 or more years of English-medium education. ILA runs two application rounds a year, one for April entry and one for September entry, and has moved entirely to an online application system, no longer accepting postal applications or the Common Application, with every applicant completing a video interview after the initial submission. Beyond ILA, Doshisha's Global Communications and Global and Regional Studies programmes teach mainly in Japanese with English components, so they are not treated as fully English-medium routes here. Tuition for ILA follows its own fee schedule, higher in the first year than in years two through four.
