University of Tartu Admission Requirements 2027

The University of Tartu, founded in 1632, is Estonia's oldest and largest university, with around 15,000 students, some 1,600 of them international, and 28 English-taught programmes in 2026. Non-EU students pay EUR 4,200 to EUR 13,200 a year, Medicine being the most expensive, and from 2026-27 there are no tuition waivers for newly admitted students from outside the EU and EEA. The application fee is EUR 100.

English test waiver

Tartu accepts only TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic, Cambridge English and PTE Academic, and lists the exemptions as exhaustive. IELTS Academic must be 6.0 with no part below 5.5, and General Training is not accepted. TOEFL iBT must be 75 for tests before 21 January 2026, or 4 overall on the new scale with speaking 4 and the other sections 3.5. PTE Academic must be 59 and Cambridge 169. A test must be taken no more than two years before applying. The test is waived for secondary education completed in English in the EU or EEA, Switzerland, the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand, or at least one full-time academic year of English-medium higher education in one of those countries; online or offshore study does not count.
