Admission at a glance

The University of Innsbruck runs a general online application window for bachelor's, diploma and master's programmes without a selection procedure well ahead of each semester, alongside a shorter, earlier window specifically for non-EEA citizens and stateless persons. For winter semester 2026/27, non-EEA applicants applied from 1 April to 15 May 2026, ahead of the general admission period that ran 13 July to 5 September 2026 for bachelor's and diploma programmes. For summer semester 2027, the non-EEA application window runs from 1 September to 15 October 2026, ahead of the general admission period of 11 January to 5 February 2027 for bachelor's and diploma, or 31 March 2027 for master's. Applicants need a school leaving certificate that gives general university entrance qualification, with original documents, sworn translation where the original is not in German or English, and legalisation. A school-leaving certificate from Afghanistan alone does not admit to a bachelor's programme, unless the applicant has completed a further two years of study, which the university reviews case by case. Third-country nationals with a student residence permit under the Settlement and Residence Act pay tuition of EUR 726.72 a semester from their first semester, unless they hold citizenship of a country on the developing countries exemption list, in which case the exemption applies automatically without a separate application. The language of instruction for all bachelor's and diploma programmes, and most master's and doctoral programmes, is German, and applicants to those need German at CEFR A2 already at the time of application; English-taught programmes ask for English at B2 (IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 87, PTE Academic 62), except the Master's in English and American Studies, which needs C1. No official page found during this research states an application fee for general admission.

Requirements

Bachelor and diploma

A school leaving certificate giving general university entrance qualification in the country where it was issued, submitted with sworn translation (if not in German or English) and legalisation. A certificate from Afghanistan alone is not accepted unless the applicant has completed two further years of study, reviewed case by case. German-taught programmes (the large majority) need German at CEFR A2 at the time of application; English-taught programmes need English at B2.

Master

A completed bachelor's degree recognised as giving entry to the field. Most master's programmes are taught in German and need German at A2 at application; English-taught master's programmes need English at B2, except the Master's in English and American Studies, which needs C1.

PhD

A completed master's degree or equivalent and admission to a doctoral programme; language requirement follows the programme's language of instruction.
