University of Innsbruck Admission Requirements 2027

University of Innsbruck is Austria's second largest and third oldest university, founded in 1669, in the Alpine city of Tyrol's capital. It offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes mostly taught in German, with a smaller number of English-taught master's programmes.

Requirements

Bachelor and diploma

A school leaving certificate giving general university entrance qualification in the country where it was issued, submitted with sworn translation (if not in German or English) and legalisation. A certificate from Afghanistan alone is not accepted unless the applicant has completed two further years of study, reviewed case by case. German-taught programmes (the large majority) need German at CEFR A2 at the time of application; English-taught programmes need English at B2.

Master

A completed bachelor's degree recognised as giving entry to the field. Most master's programmes are taught in German and need German at A2 at application; English-taught master's programmes need English at B2, except the Master's in English and American Studies, which needs C1.

PhD

A completed master's degree or equivalent and admission to a doctoral programme; language requirement follows the programme's language of instruction.

Documents

Original school leaving certificate or prior degree certificate. Sworn translation into German or English where the original is in another language. Legalisation of the original documents for the issuing country. German or English language certificate matching the programme's language of instruction. Passport copy.

How to apply

  1. Check your programme's language of instruction and whether it runs a selection procedure.
  2. Apply online within the non-EEA application window if you are a third-country national, or the general window if you are an EU/EEA/Swiss citizen.
  3. Submit your school leaving or degree certificate with sworn translation and legalisation, plus your language certificate.
  4. Wait for the admission decision from the Admission Department.
  5. Complete enrolment by the admission period deadline and pay the tuition fee, where it applies, and the ÖH union fee each semester.

English test waiver

Cambridge B2 First (FCE) is also accepted. The Master's Programme in English and American Studies requires C1 level instead of B2. Certificates may not be older than two years at submission. TOEFL introduced a new scoring scale from 2026; Innsbruck lists the equivalent minimum as an overall score of at least 4.5 on that new scale alongside the legacy 87 iBT score.
