IELTS Requirement for Japan Universities: Minimum Score

Typical minimum: 6.0 overall where a university states a fixed minimum, though individual universities and programmes in this project's own sample range from 5.5 to 6.5, and several programmes (Kyoto iUP, Institute of Science Tokyo's GSEP) publish no fixed minimum at all, verified 7 September 2026.

Computed from this project's own sample of 13 researched Japanese universities: IELTS 6.0 is the most common stated floor (University of Tokyo's College of Design, Nagoya's G30 programmes, Kyushu's International Undergraduate Programs, Tohoku's Gateway College, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, Sophia's Faculty of Liberal Arts, Waseda's SILS and University of Tsukuba's BPGI all state or are consistently cited at 6.0), Osaka's Human Sciences IUDP and Hokkaido's Modern Japanese Studies Program both ask for 6.5, Hiroshima's Integrated Global Studies asks for 5.5 on its main selection systems, and Kyoto iUP and Science Tokyo's GSEP state no fixed minimum (Kyoto iUP publishes 6.5 only as a typical successful-applicant reference score). studyinjapan.go.jp does not publish one national figure.
