Admission at a glance

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is a public research university whose main campus is in Skudai, Johor, with a second campus in Kuala Lumpur. International students apply for undergraduate places through UTM's SMARt online admission system, submitting a Senior High School Certificate or equivalent pre-university qualification, evidence of English proficiency, and passing a faculty interview where the programme requires one; the university stopped offering its undergraduate Bridging Programme for international applicants from the 2026/2027 session onward. UTM's general English floor for undergraduate entry is IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 46 or PTE Academic 51, with a materially higher bar (IELTS 6.5) for its Teaching of English as a Second Language degree; postgraduate applicants need IELTS 6.0 or above. Tuition is published as a full-programme total rather than an annual figure and depends on the school and programme length: eight-semester engineering, computing and science degrees run from about RM 55,000 to RM 75,000 for the whole degree, six-semester architecture and management programmes from about RM 45,800 to RM 51,600, and Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology programmes reach RM 76,000, against a published low of RM 55,000 for education programmes. On top of tuition, UTM charges a RM 6,152 registration fee, an RM 1,075 per-semester service fee and an RM 220 graduation fee. The application fee for international applicants is RM 450. After an offer is accepted, UTM applies for the student's EMGS Visa Approval Letter, which the university's own visa page states takes three to six weeks, before the student applies for a Single Entry Visa and travels.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree

A Senior High School Certificate or equivalent pre-university qualification recognised by UTM, plus a pass in the English Proficiency requirement and, for some programmes, a faculty interview. Country-specific entry requirements apply and are published separately by UTM's admission office. The undergraduate Bridging Programme for international students was discontinued from the 2026/2027 session.

English language

General floor: IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 46, PTE Academic 51, MUET Band 4.0, or Cambridge/Linguaskill 160. The Bachelor of Education (TESL) requires IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 79 or PTE 63. Results are valid for two years.

Postgraduate (master's and PhD)

A bachelor's degree with good honours from UTM or another university the Senate recognises, or an equivalent qualification plus relevant work experience assessed through UTM's Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) route. English floor: IELTS 6.0 (or an English preparation course first if the score is 5.5 or below); TESL postgraduate applicants need IELTS 7.0.
