The University of Iceland opens its application period for 2027-28 around mid December 2026. International applicants to undergraduate and master's programmes must apply by 1 February 2027, and the university must also have received their certified academic transcripts and previous diplomas by 1 February; doctoral applicants to the schools of Education, Humanities and Social Sciences have the same deadline, while Health Sciences and Engineering and Natural Sciences accept doctoral applications all year. Icelandic and Nordic citizens have later deadlines. Applicants from outside the EEA and EFTA pay a one-off processing fee of 20,000 ISK, about 135 euros. The university warns that students from outside the EEA are unlikely to be able to start in a spring semester, because their residence permit applications must be submitted by 1 November. The most important change for 2027 is financial: the Icelandic government has authorised universities to charge tuition to non-EEA students from the autumn semester of 2027, and the University of Iceland lists the per-credit fee as to be determined, with students starting in autumn 2026, current students, doctoral students and permanent residents exempt. Everyone pays the 100,000 ISK annual registration fee by 4 July. Only a few undergraduate programmes are taught in English. English is required at TOEFL iBT 79, IELTS 6.5 or PTE 58 for most programmes.
